Another Child Protective Services/FAIL

abuse by cpsIt’s well established that children are being removed from their parents by CPS for everything from medical disputes to anonymous calls, many times with no evidence to back them up.  Here we have the anonymous call that finally made authorities take action on a teenager’s abusive living conditions known to Social Services for the past year.  Parent’s who have never done anything to harm or abuse their children in any way, yet have had them taken, and accused of abuse or neglect, can’t fathom how these stories can happen under the guise of “protecting” children.

An autistic teen was locked in a basement of her home with a temperature of 50 degrees when rescued.  The 13-year old girl was not allowed to sit on furniture or use the bathroom in the home, and was made to wear diapers.  Due to no access to a toilet or sink, she went to school covered in feces.

The anonymous call to police said there was a girl kept in the basement — being “treated like an animal.”  Fox News reports the social worker who had been working with the family told police the anonymous caller was right. “The teenage girl was being treated like an animal.”

According to the AP, the girl “told school personnel that when she arrived home each day she was taken into the basement and forced to change into a “onesie with a zipper in the back.” She told school officials she would remain there until the next day.  The room apparently had a cot, but the teenager told officials that her blankets were taken away because she soiled them.

“Police said teachers and counselors reported the neglect to the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services in December, according to WITI-TV Fox 6 News. School officials contacted the teen’s mother, but the girl continued to show up at school with “dried stool in a diaper or sometimes on her clothing,”

The Wisconsin couple accused is the mother and her boyfriend, each charged with child neglect. The teenager has now been removed from the home.

This story goes a long way to the argument that there is no need for Social Services’ interference in families’ lives.  If neglect or abuse are committed, law enforcement should press charges, and only then should any child be removed from a home.  As it stands now many children are removed from homes, and families destroyed where no charges are ever filed.  If Social Services does nothing in the face of obvious neglect and abuse until law enforcement gets involved, whatever are they doing in all these other families lives?  Let law enforcement charge them for a crime, or leave families alone!
